Hi, I’m Yuqi Cheng, a data journalist, developer, freelancer, and media researcher, raised in China and based in the U.S.
Email me: yc4330@columbia.edu
I'm enthusiastic in developing AI/coding projects to automatic workflow for journalists, or just make their lives easier, while keeping an eye on privacy and ethics from the perspective as a former tech & privacy reporter.
Click to see my projects, tutorials, and featured reporting stories about privacy and tech policies in China from 50+ bylines at Southern Metropolis Daily, a national newspaper in China.
With a B.S. in Physics from Tsinghua University, I’ve always stayed connected to the scientific community, where my friends and childhood dreams reside.
I’ve reported on the challenges faced by Chinese-descent scholars in America during the Trump-era China Initiative and contributed as a freelancer to The Intellectuals, a non-profit media outlet in China.
Some data in China can be challenging to access, but I still strive to uncover the hidden story from various sources or my own data collection, and present it through visualizations.
My recent audience research highlights a unique mindset segmentation from survey data analysis about Chinese migrant workers.
I care deeply about issues like poverty, housing, and crime in my community.
During my M.S. program in Data Journalism at Columbia University, I reported on topics such as migrant shelters, housing evictions, and cold cases in New York City.
